When it comes to non-lethal life-changing conditions, hair loss can be considered as one of the most common, particularly for men. The truth is that there are many types of hair loss conditions. When it comes to conditions like androgenic alopecia, hair loss is very much unavoidable because it is the hormones that induce the hair loss condition. The hormones involved in androgenic alopecia are called androgens and the most known androgen would be testosterone. The way androgens can induce hair loss is not something that can be answered in simple terms because the condition involves a process wherein certain biological actions are triggered.
Androgens have different effects on hair follicles, depending on the type or where the hair follicle is located. For example, the response of armpit hair in the presence of an androgen is to grow, whereas the response of hairs in the scalp in the presence of the same type of androgen is to fall off.
Androgenic alopecia is often referred to as male pattern baldness because it always exhibits the same pattern of hair loss. There are actually two kinds of androgens involved for this type of hair loss condition – testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. The hormone testosterone does not exclusively occur in men which is why women can too suffer androgenic alopecia, but their hair loss style is quite different. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the other hand is a byproduct of testosterone and an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This in turn results in a more potent form of testosterone which is in the form of dihydrotestosterone.
The truth is DHT alone will not induce baldness. However, when DHT levels become excessive, they will have an interaction with the receptors on the inside of the hair follicles. When this happens, the hair growth of the affected hair follicles will be less due to a shorter growing period and will quickly transition into the resting period. This will result in a greater amount of hairs that are in their resting period. In addition to this, as soon as new hair starts to grow back, all the hairs in their resting period will be shed and new but much thinner hair will begin to grow. But this type of hair growth will only be to some point because once the weakened follicle can no longer support hair growth, then the scalp will become bare showing signs of hair loss.
While all of us have both testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in our bodies, not everyone will become afflicted with hair loss. This is because the genetics of some individuals, especially those that have androgenic alopecia, have a greater number of androgen receptors in their hair follicles as compared to the rest of us who do not have their hair loss condition.
